Much has been accomplished by Maria Hernandez, who at the age of 20 has done things that others may take a lifetime to achieve. Hernandez thanks her local Boys and Girls Club for helping her get to where she is today.
Growing up, Hernandez said she has lived in what a lot of people consider to be a broken home. In high school, Hernandez was very involved in her community by doing volunteer work and working multiple jobs, and was able to be the first in her family to graduate high school.
“I didn’t want to just like everybody else, I wanted to stand out,” said Hernandez.
Through the Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year program Hernandez was able to attend college, travel the world and even meet President Barak Obama in the White House.
“That program, I can say, completely changed my life around,” said Hernandez.
Because of the program, Hernandez wanted to be there for those who were in a situation much like hers. Today, she works for the Boys and Girls Club of Kingsport, where she can be there for kids as someone whom they can reach out to.
"I think, for me, that’s the biggest reward,” said Hernandez. “Knowing that I can touch at least one child’s life today… to me that’s worth it.”
Hernandez’s faith is very important to her, and she said she uses the Bible verse Philippians 4:13 to help her get through any of life’s obstacles that get in her way.

En sus 20 años de vida María Hernández ha logrado lo que a otros les puede llevar toda una vida. Hernández agradece al “Boys and Girls Club” por ayudarla a llegar adonde hoy está.
Hernández dice que ella creció en lo que muchas personas consideran un hogar roto. En la escuela secundaria, Hernández estaba muy involucrada en la comunidad como voluntaria al mismo tiempo que trabajaba en otros trabajos y pudo ser la primera de su familia en graduarse de la escuela secundaria.
“No quería ser como los demás, quería sobresalir”, dijo Hernández.
A través del Programa del Joven del Año, del “Boys and Girls Club”, Hernández pudo asistir a la universidad, viajar por el mundo e incluso conocer al Presidente Barack Obama en la Casa Blanca.
“Puedo decir que ese programa ha cambiado completamente mi vida”, dijo Hernández.
Gracias al programa, Hernández desea ayudar a los que se encuentran en su misma situación. Hoy en día, ella trabaja para el “Boys and Girls Club” de Kingsport, donde puede estar al alcance de los niños que la necesiten.
“Creo que es mi mayor recompensa”, dijo Hernández. “El saber que puedo influir en la vida de al menos un niño… para mí vale la pena”.
Para Hernández, su fe es muy importante y ella dice que el versículo de la Biblia Filipenses 4:13 la ayuda a sobrepasar cualquier obstáculo que encuentra en su camino.
