Quinceañera: An important rite of passage

Once her Mass is complete, Leslie’s celebration begins. The entire community gathers at a rented hall to mark her transition to womanhood. Leslie arrives by limousine. With her parents beside her, Leslie is led to the center of the ballroom. She is seated, and joyous anticipation quiets her guests. As music begins to play, her father takes her hand for their dance. The dance between the girl and her father is one of the oldest quinceañera traditions. Following this display, Leslie sits in the middle of the room and her symbolic flat shoes are now changed to high heels. She is given a ring, a tiara and other gifts. Her transformation is complete.

Next come a waltz and several special dances performed by the entire court, with elaborate choreography and costume changes. A mariachi band plays “Happy Birthday.” Afterward, another band takes the stage, and Leslie and her guests enjoy dancing, food and celebration for the rest of the night. The beginning of her adult life starts with a bang.

“I wanted everyone to come and just have fun,” she said.
